Current Vibrations No.1 is the first release in an intention driven improvised recording series. Each recording session incorporates a new lineup of musicians and challenges the players to expand their capacity to “listen” for a collective intuition or expression to come forth that inspires melody, evolution in rhythm, and dynamic shift. The aim is for the players to co-create each moment, not simply responding to one another’s choices. The purity of co-creation is dependent on each player's ability to remain present, and follow their intuition with complete confidence. That being said, each session is a practice, not unlike meditation, potentially serving up moments of doubt, judgment, and frustration. And through practice, each player hones their ability to navigate the internal struggle, remain open, and find acceptance, allowing for something magical to unfold.
On December 15th, 2023 Jay Taylor (Current Vibrations) invited Ana Everling and Mehtab Kirtan to his home studio in Chicago for a recording session. Ana and Mehtab were told that another musician would be joining the session but were not made aware of who it would be or what instrument(s) they would play. While Jay had collaborated musically with both musicians for years, Ana and Mehtab had only met once or twice in passing.
The project's creator and curator, Jay Taylor, was asked why he selected musicians who didn’t know each other. “I love the idea of capturing the birth of a musical relationship. In some ways it is like a first date, both parties are on their best behavior, but once the first sound is introduced into the space, all bets are off and what comes up, comes up. What I knew going in was that Ana and Mehtab had the technical prowess to go in a number of musical directions, AND that they each had the innate ability to emote from their core and that it wouldn’t take much for both of them to open up to the experience and let it flow. Man did it flow.”
